Course Concept

AP Biology is an advanced placement course that covers a wide range of topics in biology. It is designed to provide students with a deep understanding of biological concepts and processes, as well as develop their skills in scientific inquiry and data analysis.

The course covers various areas of biology, including cellular processes, genetics, evolution, ecology, and organismal biology. Students learn about the structure and function of cells, the principles of genetics and inheritance, the mechanisms of evolution, the interrelationships of organisms and their environment, and the diversity of life forms.

  • Cellular Processes: Students study the structure and function of cells, including cellular respiration, photosynthesis, cell division, and cell signaling. They learn about the organization and regulation of cellular processes, including the role of enzymes and the flow of genetic information.
  • Genetics: AP Biology covers the principles of genetics, including Mendelian genetics, molecular genetics, and population genetics. Students learn about inheritance patterns, DNA structure and replication, gene expression and regulation, and genetic variation.
  • Evolution: The course explores the mechanisms of evolution, including natural selection, genetic drift, and speciation. Students learn about the evidence for evolution, the process of adaptation, and the patterns of biodiversity on Earth.
  • Ecology: AP Biology examines the interrelationships of organisms and their environment. Students learn about ecosystem dynamics, population ecology, community interactions, and global environmental issues. They study ecological concepts such as energy flow, nutrient cycling, and the impact of human activities on ecosystems.
  • Organismal Biology: The course covers the structure, function, and classification of organisms. Students study various organisms, including plants, animals, and microorganisms, and explore their anatomy, physiology, and behavior. They learn about plant growth and development, animal physiology systems, and the diversity of life forms.
  • Scientific Inquiry and Data Analysis: AP Biology emphasizes scientific inquiry and critical thinking skills. Students engage in laboratory investigations to develop their skills in designing experiments, collecting and analyzing data, and drawing conclusions. They also learn to interpret and evaluate scientific data, use mathematical models, and communicate their findings effectively.
  • AP Exam Format: The AP Biology exam consists of both multiple-choice and free-response questions. The multiple-choice section assesses conceptual understanding, while the free-response section evaluates students' ability to apply their knowledge and skills to solve problems and analyze data. The exam allows students to demonstrate their mastery of biology concepts and their ability to think scientifically.

  • When is the best time to get started?
    expand_more

The earlier the better! When students come to us right before it is time to apply to college, there is only so much we can do. We can certainly help these students with score improvements and craft as compelling an application as possible, but we are given experiences and data points that cannot be altered.

When students come to us early in their educational careers, we pair them with a counselor to help them develop as applicants, students, and people early on. We help students strategize early, build their profiles, and stand out from their peers. We help students explore and develop their academic interests, engage in unique and meaningful extracurricular activities, strengthen their personal qualities and leadership skills, and ultimately, position them to get into the best schools possible. We start building on your academic foundations so you have enough time to ace your SAT test.

It takes A LOT of hard work, strategy, determination, and self-reflection to get into the school of your dreams. At AP Guru, we are here, every step of the way, to help you get there.

  • Do test prep courses work?
    expand_more

Yes! Standardized tests focus on a small, unique set of skills and topics. By knowing exactly what types of questions are on the test, a student gains a distinct advantage. Furthermore, a great tutoring company can build on this advantage by providing a highly individualized learning experience and a wealth of fantastic strategies for all types of students.  We have the evidence from thousands of students across 10+ years that great improvement is possible for nearly everyone.

  • Do you only help students who want to go to top schools?
    expand_more

No. We know that each student is different and has unique goals and aspirations. Our focus is to help each student excel in the tests and exams they are preparing towards.

  • What kind of results should I expect?
    expand_more

In terms of academic scores, for students not already at the top of the range, we typically want to see at least a 20 percentile rank improvement (the actual raw score this translates to varies across the scale). Going from the 50th to 70th percentile or from the 70th to 90th typically opens up a whole new range of schools for students.
