Course Concept
AP United States History (APUSH) is a college-level course that explores the history of the United States from pre-Columbian times to the present. It provides students with a comprehensive understanding of key historical events, developments, and themes that have shaped the nation.
The course covers a wide range of topics, including political, economic, social, cultural, and diplomatic history. It examines the interactions between different groups and regions within the United States, as well as the country's relationships with other nations.
- Historical Thinking Skills: The course focuses on developing students' critical thinking and analytical skills. Students learn to analyze primary and secondary sources, evaluate historical evidence, and construct historical arguments. They also develop skills in contextualization, causation, continuity and change over time, and periodization.
- Key Themes and Concepts: AP American History emphasizes important themes and concepts that cut across different time periods. These include issues such as democracy, diversity, economic development, immigration, industrialization, reform movements, war, and civil rights. Students explore how these themes have shaped the nation's history and continue to influence contemporary American society.
- Document Analysis: Students engage in document-based analysis, where they critically examine primary sources such as speeches, letters, photographs, and political cartoons. This helps them develop skills in sourcing, corroborating, and contextualizing historical documents to understand their significance in historical events.
- Historical Periodization: The course is divided into nine periods, spanning from pre-Columbian civilizations to the present day. Each period focuses on specific historical developments and provides students with a framework for understanding the chronology and progression of American history.
- Exam Preparation: Students engage in activities and assignments that prepare them for the AP American History exam. The exam includes multiple-choice questions, short-answer questions, document-based questions, and a long essay. It assesses students' knowledge of historical content, their ability to analyze and interpret primary and secondary sources, and their skills in historical thinking.
